Kinnetic Laboratories and our affiliated testing laboratory, ToxScan, Inc., offer 30 years of aquatic toxicology experience. ToxScan, Inc. urrently operates two laboratory facilities in Santa Cruz County, under State of California Department of Health ELAP Certificate No. 1515. Our laboratory is uniquely experienced in toxicity evaluations of ambient and storm waters, having pioneered non-point source TIE methodology in the central California region. Testing is performed following state and federal standardized protocols using a wide range of life stages of marine, estuarine, and freshwater species

Toxicity/Bioaccumulation Testing Facilities

ToxScan, Inc. has the experience, capabilities, and facilities for testing water, sediments, soils, sludges, and other materials. Facilities include a coastal toxicity and bioaccumulation testing laboratory equipped with a running seawater system drawing from the pristine coastal waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. A second facility co-located with our affiliated analytical chemistry firm features freshwater and marine static bioassay test capabilities.

We have carried out thousands of toxicity and bioaccumulation studies over the last four decades. These data have been used in critical applied projects involving maintenance and capital improvement projects, effluent discharges, storm water impacts, site-specific water quality standards determinations, oil spills, and numerous other practical projects that required quantitative data to support compliance, permitting, or design issues.

Low Detection Limits, Specialized Sampling
Working with low detection limits requires special care and protocols, both in the field and in the laboratory. Kinnetic Laboratories has successfully completed many projects with extremely low detection limits - detection limits that are orders of magnitude below hazardous waste standards. We also have expertise in sampling difficult matrices, such as saline waters and in the presence of multiple contaminants of concern.

Data Base Management
Data are managed within electronic databases of standard or customized formats appropriate to the project and to the client.

Data Validations and QA/QC Evaluations
All data are validated and evaluated thoroughly according to USEPA guidance, including using the same standards for the low level detection analyses. Special matrix cleanups and reanalysis are carried out as necessary. All data are coded as to QC criteria and detailed QA/QC evaluations and summaries are included in all reports.

Pilot Scale Testing, Special Studies
Many applied projects require special investigations in order to obtain data to provide model calibration data, generate design data, or answer key issues. Kinnetic Laboratories maintains laboratory capabilities for special studies including:

  • Column tests, pollutant mobility determinations
  • Pore water extraction and testing
  • Pilot scale testing
  • Long-tube settling tests
  • Sediment/seawater partitioning coefficients, model calibrations
  • Pilot storm water BMP testing
  • Liming tests of dredge material
  • Sediment stabilization for contaminates
